The primary function of a Kennel Club is to establish breed standards, record pedigrees, and provide competitions/shows.

It serves as a registry for the enlistment of adult purebred dogs and litters of puppies born to purebred parents.

It frames rules for conformation dog shows, trials & accreditation of judges and also lays down the elaborate details of acceptable and non-acceptable Breed Standards.

Indian Kennel Clubs | The KCI and INKC

The Kennel Club of India (KCI) and Indian National Kennel Club (INKC) are the only two leading authorities in India for the registration of purebreds and maintaining the recognized registry.

Both the India Kennel Clubs, The Kennel Club of India, and the Indian National Kennel Club, INKC hold Seminars, Workshops, and Events to disseminate useful information for the benefit of dogs and dog owners/lovers.

Kennel Clubs | What is a Kennel Club?

The primary function of a Kennel Club is to establish breed standards, record pedigrees, and provide competitions/shows.

It serves as a registry for the enlistment of adult purebred dogs and litters of puppies born to purebred parents.

It frames rules for conformation dog shows, trials & accreditation of judges and also lays down the elaborate details of acceptable and non-acceptable Breed Standards.

Kennel Clubs | Role and Functions

The Kennel Club of India and the Indian National Kennel Club are the two leading authorities on the dog registration of purebreds and maintaining the recognized registry. They issue pedigrees for the purebreds and their litters.

These two Indian Kennel Clubs register litters of puppies, whose sire and dam have both been registered with either of them, i.e. The Kennel Club of India, and the Indian National Kennel Club.

Both the Kennel Clubs also do dog registration for dogs that have been imported from other countries and dog transfer of ownership.

They also register dogs that are purebred but whose parents do not carry any papers as ‘purebreds with unknown pedigree’.

The Registration Certificates issued by these Kennel Clubs also known as Pedigree Papers or RCs are important documents depicting the lineage of the dogs.

The RCs are continuously amended, appended, and updated as the dog keeps winning championships or changes owners, in case of dog transfer of ownership.

The Kennel Clubs maintain a registry of the reputed and established breeders by registering their Kennel Name, which may be added exclusively as an affix to their bred dogs.

Both the India Kennel Clubs, The Kennel Club of India and the Indian National Kennel Club, host various Seminars and Workshops, Events, Recognition of Breeds, Dog-lovers’ Tests, Obedience Tests, Dog Behaviour and Training Classes, and Annual Dog Shows across the country, and award championships to various breeds of dogs.

The two Indian Kennel Clubs of The Kennel Club of India and the Indian National Kennel Club organize, conduct, promote, and sanction events of Specialty Dog Shows and General Dog Shows every year all over the country. These Dog Shows are instrumental in gauging the standard of breeding of pure-bred dogs.

In addition to the dog shows, The Kennel Club of India, and the Indian National Kennel Club also organize events like a fancy dress competition and doggie dates for dogs to encourage all the dog owners to personally involve themselves in activities relating to their dogs.

The Kennel Club of India (KCI) | An Overview

The Kennel Club of India was established in 1978, as a centralized structure, to assimilate and affiliate all the existing established Kennel Clubs of India, which followed the procedures of The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom.

The Kennel Club of India is a member of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (The FCI) and is also a member of the International Organization for Standardization.

The most common registered breeds with The Kennel Club of India are Great Danes, Rottweilers, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Dachshunds, Dalmatians, Dobermanns, and Pugs.

In addition to the routine functions, The Kennel Club of India publishes an in-house non-commercial monthly magazine, the Indian Kennel Gazette exclusively for all its members.

Indian National Kennel Club (INKC) | An Overview

The Indian National Kennel Club (INKC) was established in 1957, as a non-profit organization, to increase the awareness, love, and popularity of dogs and to promote proper breeding, rearing, and training of dogs

The main purpose of INKC is to inform, educate and empower the general dog-owners and hobbyist-breeders, leading to a better understanding of their dogs and establishing a mutually fulfilling relationship between them.

The motto of INKC is “Dogs for a Good Life; A Good Life for Dogs.”

The most common registered breeds with the Indian National Kennel Club are; Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Dachshunds, Doberman Pinschers, Pugs, and Mudhol Hounds.

INKC spreads the love of dogs, and towards acceptance, and understanding of all dogs.

INKC has many feathers to its cap of being the first Kennel Club of India to have recognized and promoted our Indian breeds and to have conducted Police Dog Trials.

INKC was the first Kennel Club of India to commence Dog Agility and to encourage the Dog Lovers’ Test.

International Kennel Clubs

All nations with active groups of dog breeders and dog owners/lovers who indulge in owning, breeding, dog shows, dog grooming, etc. usually have their national kennel clubs, often affiliated with kennel clubs of other countries.

Most kennel clubs have reciprocal arrangements for cross-country ease. A dog registered in any one country can be re-registered in another country, in case the dog is imported.

The largest canine organization in the world, Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) represents over ninety countries and has ties to many countries’ major kennel clubs either as full members, associate members, or contract partners.

There may be reciprocal agreements and understandings between several affiliate members of the FCI.

The other most prominent kennel clubs are The Kennel Club (United Kingdom) the American Kennel Club & the United Kennel Club (both United States) and the Canadian Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, The Kennel Club of India & The Indian National Kennel Club (both India), New Zealand Kennel Club, Kennel Union of Southern Africa, East Africa Kennel Club (Kenya) which offer K9 events and training programs as well as dog registration services.

American Kennel Club (AKC)

The American Kennel Club (AKC) was founded in 1884 as a not-for-profit organization in the United States.

AKC has entrusted itself with the task to do everything to advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running, and maintenance of purity of thoroughbred dogs.

AKC is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs, and breeding for type and function.

AKC is recognized as a trusted expert in dog breeds, dog health, dog sports, dog ownership, and dog training information.

AKC and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership.

Today, AKC is the largest and oldest not-for-profit all-breed registry in the world, with more than 190+ recognized breeds. It has more than 5,000+ licensed member clubs and affiliated organizations.

United Kennel Club

The United Kennel Club (UKC) was founded in 1898 in the United States as a profit-making corporation, open to individuals.

UKC is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from 50 states and 25 foreign countries. Essentially, the UKC world of dogs is a working world.

UKC supports the Total Dog philosophy through its events and programs. A Total Dog displays equal parts Function, Temperament, and Structure. Total Dog is a way to highlight the instincts and heritage of dogs, who look and perform equally well.

UKC is acclaimed to have family-oriented, fun, friendly, inclusive, and educational events, comprising of hunting ability, training, and instinct, welcoming both purebred dogs and dogs of unknown ancestry.

UKC awards a Total Dog Award to dogs, at All-Breed Sports events, that qualify in both Conformation and eligible Performance Sports events on the same day, demonstrating both form and function
